The Government is creating a website for the patients for publishing their views on hospitals and doctors.
People will be able to "review" the performance of their GPs or hospitals through patients’ rankings and ratings of their GPs, thereby helping others to decide where to go for treatments.
The Department of Health said that the aim is to improve the performance of the GPs, consultants and managers, subject to bad reports. But doctors said the idea was "gimmicky".
NHS reforms have prompted countrywide campaigns against hospital and NHS service closures. But central to the reforms has been patient choice, a Department of Health spokesman said yesterday. "We want people to put down their views. Good or bad, we want an honest review of the services they have received.”
Patricia Hewitt, the Health Secretary, announced that the new website should be up by this summer.
The British Medical Association said the website will attract those who want to complain.
